 During the siege of 1941-42, cats disappeared (probably eaten by people), which increased the rat population. Later cats were reintroduced to alleviate the problem.

Petrogof (Peterhof = "Peter's court") palace

The palace was burned down during the siege of 1941-1942 by German troops. More than a million Russians died during the siege when the population was about 2.5 million. The palace was rebuilt recently.
